The saxophone, a brasswind rebel, owes its existence to the Sax family saga. Adolphe Sax, a musical prodigy from Brussels, kicked off his career in his father's instrument workshop before hitting the books at the Brussels Conservatory. But it wasn't until he unveiled his revolutionary bass clarinet in 1838 that the saxophone's journey truly began.
With friends like Berlioz and a knack for innovation, Sax set up shop in Paris and started churning out saxhorns, saxotrombas, and finally, in 1846, the saxophone itself.
But life wasn't all smooth sax for Adolphe. He faced a symphony of troubles—lawsuits, media attacks, even a factory fire. Yet, through the chaos, the saxophone emerged, blending the best of brass and woodwind to create a sound that resonated across genres.
By 1850, Sax's invention was stealing the spotlight in six sizes and multiple keys, solidifying its place as the rockstar of the orchestra.
